A day in Broadstairs during lockdown

Friday 15th May 2020, the sun shone and Nathan and I headed to the beach. The house was looking scruffy and needed a lot of attention but I had worked too hard lately. We were able to get out to go walking now, Boris said. So, I spent some time in the garden writing and drinking a soya milk coffee (would the dairy free life finally get rid of this cough?), listening to the fountain tinkling in the pond while my son slept. Broadstairs.  The home of Charles Dickens. We would go there. Always takes me back to happy times at college.

One pound lighter. I was dieting now. I’d lost half a stone on lockdown but wasn’t sure if that was enough so I was aiming for another half a stone before we start getting out in public again. Our local independent gluten free coffee house would be serving me cake again soon enough, so I felt it was a good idea to go a pound or two under my ideal weight just so I can enjoy a guilt free piece of carrot cake.

Broadstairs was more than beautiful, and there was a solitary cloud looking more like a feather against the deep blue back drop. I vlogged the day, pointing out my history within the local pubs and even the old Captain Digby which was now someone’s home. We had so much fun in there on the nights before we rocked up at Nero’s, the nightclub in Ramsgate. I had never known anything quite like it. Proper clubbing, so much fun, especially on a particular, chilly night in 1987 but that’s another story for another book.
“So, it was like pre-drinks then?” Nathan asked,
‘yeah, kinda, can you imagine me walking down that hill at 17 in all my stuff,’ and I remembered and laughed, ‘curly perm, big hoop earrings and so skinny, red and white striped t-shirt and a little rah rah skirt type thing,’ my mind wandered back to that girl. Carefree on that night, but unusually so.
We took photos and walked, trying to decide if it was warm enough to take the hoody off or should It be kept on. One of my lovely people phoned me and made me smile as we walked and I perched for a minute on a bench near the bandstand to enjoy the phone conversation.  All brand new and lit up, I popped the phone in my back jeans pocket and continued with the history lesson, pointing to Morellis the ice cream shop. It was closed. The windows were dusty on all of the shops since lockdown.
Handwritten notes were beginning to fade in the windows now, it had been over 8 weeks since places began to close. A long time. I had got used to it now and I liked most parts of living this lockdown life. A reason to flow downstream on the creative path, which I liked.

A local vegan shop was open for take away, one person in the shop at a time. We went in and I bought a coffee, using cash for the very first time in two months. We remained socially distant and followed the rules and walked with the takeaway coffee to sit on the pier where the most perfect empty bench gave us and our thoughts some time to pause.
It was odd seeing somewhere new again. Just like people. When we see them, that will be new too. I’m frightened.

Bleak house, where Charles Dickens lived and wrote, had the most perfect desk in front of the most perfect bay window overlooking the sea, high-up on the cliff.  I was in slight envy of that desk but remembered my own office at home with the adjacent palm tree outside. Very blessed, especially when the birds flew in and out to take the little berry type flowers.

Before long, it was time to stop escaping the lockdown and get home once again. The car felt warm so we opened up the sunroof and windows before choosing some loud, music to play and sing along to. Nathan checked his phone,
“Mum it’s work. They are opening up again. They want me to start back on Sunday,”
“No?” I said. My stomach felt like it was full of waves and I felt tears begin to build some pressure behind my eyes. I wasn’t ready. I liked lockdown. I was clearly still frightened of life, of my children being out there again, of the people getting stressed and afraid of me being so busy that I would wear a watch, check it often, work hard to stay awake and probably not be half the writer I am able to be at the moment.
“aww but I like it like this, oh, Nathan,” I said,
“Not really, I’m just joking, not yet Mum,” he smiled.

Our local walks

This time during lockdown in the UK sees us have permission to go out for one form of exercise per day.

Where I live (currently in lockdown with my children) we are very fortunate to have some beautiful countryside.  Some of it, I confess, I haven't seen before! Even some of the houses we have passed on our walks are places I haven't noticed before!  It's amazing how so much opens up your eyes to new beauties.

White knuckle riding

In my world, today is a really good day.  Yesterday was a tough one.
This video was requested to explain this rollercoaster

This whole thing seems to be 'getting you' like that doesn't it.  One day up, another day down, all the while hoping that you can white knuckle ride it out.

Part of my outing seems to be taking photos on these nature walks and I would love to share the photos here with you.  You can also see them over on my Facebook page.

The next blog post will show you what 'working in the garden' looks like. I don't mean gardening: I mean writing haha, very blessed to be able to continue working.

Please stay safe and take care. Sending you my very best wishes

Just one day out of life.

Madonna sang, "if we took a holiday, just one day out of life. It would be so nice."

Both Scott and I have been struggling with health and way too busy just lately. So we headed out for lunch on our one day holiday to spend some much needed down time together.

While I'm still on my 8 week blood sugar diet, I made choices as wise as I could while still enjoying my meal.

Drinking a litre of water must have helped with the meal. Surely.

Two glasses of prosecco were brought to us (I gave mine to Scott who is starting the blood sugar diet on Monday) as we chose our meals.

Starting with pulled pork, I passed my bread to Scotts plate. The accompanying salad was delicious. Apple and fennel. In the prettiest little mini saucepan. Copper cuteness indeed. I cannot describe the taste sensation my taste buds experienced with the pulled pork.  Amazing.

Scotts Dish...

My main course was a venison burger (I asked for this without the bun) topped with melted cheese and a tomato watercress salad which balanced out so many flavours.  Sweet potato fries were totally amazing in their own little bucket of loveliness.

Scott started a little joke with our wonderful host as she cleared empty plates.
"Was everything alright for you?" She asked warm heartedly.
"Terrible, it was terrible as you can see." Scott joked.

I did partake in dessert which was delicious and rather sugar laden I feared but other than eating cheeseboard I could not avoid such naughtiness.  I figured if I were to eat nothing for the rest of the day and be 100% carb free the following day, I could pull back my ketosis for the blood sugar diet.

Scott and I (and the family) have eaten here many times before.  I believe they are a michelin star restaurant and very much deserved.  From being just sweet and lovely to catering for me and my odd nutritional needs with the gluten free requests, I would urge you to get on over and make a reservation.

Here are the details of one of my very favourite restaurants.

Tell them I sent you!

Meanwhile, the day was topped off with Scott and I enjoying a coffee with cream while enjoying each others company.  We seldom get to spend time like this.  When we do, it's super special.  We chatted our jaws off as I looked into the lovely face of the man I shall be marrying in 8 weeks time and spending the rest of my life with.

Where is your favourite restaurant?  Would I enjoy it there? I might have to pop over.

Much love

Louise xoxo

Ps why don't you pop a days holiday in your diary.  A whole day off to indulge yourself.  Do it.

Life! Stop for a minute I want to get off!

Have you ever had those days when you are driving along and your mind races just a bit too much?

Recently, I decided after hearing another piece of sad news on the radio that I needed to take more time for fun.  More time for laughs and relaxation.
More time for friends.
Real people who will pull out all the stops for you no matter what.

A lightbulb appeared above my head and I thought, you know what, I'm going to throw a party!!!

I used to have regular house parties but life got in the way and things have been so hard.  I continued to drive along that day, unable to stop the thoughts of fun, music, cake and jolly times.  It made me happy.  I wanted to stop thinking about work just for a moment.  You see, I get very passionate about my work and throw myself in to the deep end.  That's just me, just how I roll.  Yet it can manifest itself into ways that hurt your physical self.

So I threw a party for Scott as he turned 45.  So many amazing friends arrived,  we danced to the sounds of The Rat Pack and ate gluten free chocolate cakes! Of course there were party poppers for the children to enjoy making piles of streamers out of.

Fun!  We had fun!

Laughter,  we had laughter.  It was amazing.

The meaning of life is JOY.  I needed to remind myself.

Much love

Louise xoxo

Meeting Tyler Oakley and Stephen H Vlog

Good morning everyone!

How's life treating you all?  How was your halloween?  Gosh, I feel like there is so much to catch up on between you and I.  Honestly,  things have been manic here as always and as you know by now, checking in with my blog is just the best - I love it.  My place of retreat and love. <3

My theory about firework night is this: in Kent, we seem to get a turn in the weather right after the 5th of November and typically when we see our first frost.  I'm hoping it holds out for a few more days.  I've yet another exciting weekend coming up and you don't want to miss this one! I will of course be vlogging it but also taking some photos to share with you.  If you haven't already,  sign up on the right hand side of the page to get my blogs sent straight to your inbox.  It's a great way to keep up with all your favourite blogs.

Meanwhile, I am procrastinating - I really must get back to some Uni work! I'm getting behind on projects which is super crazy.  So early in the year too! This is going to be quite a ride.

Much love

Weekend trip to the sea

I promised you another blog.  This time we went in the opposite direction to the post I showed you yesterday where we went to the park.

Ground ourselves again with the beauty of nature in the form of the beautiful coastline we have here in Kent.  The sea was looking beautiful and honestly, I began to feel like a new person after the wind blew away those proverbial cobwebs.  I will also share some of these photos over on my photography blog too.

Hope you are having a wonderful week and I wish you much love

Louise xoxo

#BattenVEDA - the playlist so far

Hey everyone!

As my last Blog post mentioned,  I am taking part in #BattenVEDA.  This means I blog every day in August.  There is a subject you can chose to follow if you like!

So far I have,  although it's just slightly crazy!  For instance,  todays VLOG has me telling you who is my favourite Alice in Wonderland character and why!

From the middle of a field on the Kent/Sussex borders I have found a little corner with some WI-Fi, just enough to pop a quick blog post up for you!

I have filmed and uploaded 5 videos so far and I'll share the playlist here for you to have a look and a giggle at.  We are having fun camping and you can see all the action on the videos.  We visited this same place last year and you can see this blog post here.

Rest assured I will be adding lots of photography for you to see really soon,  meanwhile, here is the latest Vlog for you to enjoy!

Much love

Louise xoxo

One more week of Camp NanoWriMo

Who's writing?

Are you doing Camp NanoWriMo?  Well, I am and loving it.  My story is taking twists and turns that I definitely didn't expect to happen! The romance is just about to begin to bloom between the two main characters Liv and Thomas. I can't wait to see what starts to happen!

Previously, I never quite understood novelists who explained how the story was just happening as if it was out of their control.  Yet something seems to happen when you get in the flow and it's like the story takes on a mind of its own!

Today I shall be writing more and I will smash my word count that I set for NaNoWriMo of 10,000.  The story needs to be much longer but knowing I have at least hit those 10,000 words takes the pressure off.

My main surprise has been how I have found a lack of motivation!!! Gosh, what's that all about?  I used to sit in judgement with authors who complained about this issue.  I was always dreaming of the chance to sit at my desk and write, write, write.  Although I have now found ways that work for me, doing the one thing I dreamed of could get a little monotonous.  Instead I move around a lot with the laptop,  write with a pen sometimes in my ideas book,  interact with other members of Camp NanoWrimo.

I'm not sure when the book is likely to get released.  I have realised the best thing to do is get the story down.  Edit later.  Lots of spelling, typing, grammatical errors that need sorting.  During camp, it is the writing of the first draught which counts.  Editing can come along later.  I'm very excited to finish my word count today and see how many more words flow.

Loving my writing! I can't wait to share this love story with you!

Come back soon for more updates on the story and some exciting news about my podcast!

Much love as always

Louise xoxo
